Family Bible - Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson may be my favorite singer/song writer. He has written many songs that a lot of artists have made famous. His voice is very easily recognizable, and I think it sounds good. I have heard it said about Neil Diamond that you either love his music or you hate it. I think the same may be true for Willie.

You may be wondering why I put a picture of my dog on this post. Trigger is named after Willie's guitar which is named after Roy Rogers' horse. Maybe Hannah and Tony should name their son Trigger to keep the tradition going. (I'm joking, I don't really want you to name your son after my dog. But if you still haven't come up with a name, maybe you could name him Luci after your dog, to toughen him up like Johnny Cash's song Boy Named Sue.)

The picture in the background of the title of this blog is Willie/Trigger. Trigger is a Martin N-20, a classical guitar not designed to play with a pick, so it doesn't have a pick guard. Over time Willie has worn a hole there because he plays with a pick. Trigger also has a sound that you know it when you here it (of course Willie's style of playing is a lot of that). He has said that when that hole gets so bad that it makes Trigger unplayable he will probably retire.

The song Family Bible could have been written about my family. Don't confuse this song with Who Gets The Family Bible written by Rick Logan for the movie Step Brothers. That song is one of the little things that make Step Brothers and Talladega Nights so funny. When we were little the whole family used to sit on the living room floor and read the Bible (and Character  Sketches; if you haven't heard of these books look them up on amazon.com), sing hymns and worship songs, and pray before we went to bed.

The version  of Family Bible that I have is on the album VH1 Storytellers: Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson (1998).

There's a family Bible on the table each page is torn and hard to read
But the family Bible on the table will ever be my key to memories
At the end of day when work was over and when the evening meal was done
Dad would read to us from the family Bible
And we'd count our many blessings one by one
I can see us sittin' round the table when from the family Bible dad would read
I can hear my mother softly singing rock of ages rock of ages cleft for me

Now this old world of ours is filled with trouble but this old world would oh so better be
If we'd find more Bibles on the tables and mothers singing rock of ages cleft for me
I can see us sittin' round the table...
Rock of ages rock of ages cleft for me

IT'S TRIGGER! I love that doggy!

I heard this song once playing in my Nanna's kitchen. THAT is one good memory I definitely have. Her husband Ronnie would be making his pole beans on the stove and she would be making ham and mashed potatoes and I would sit at the table with a coloring book or something while that song and a few others of Willie's would be playing. Ronnie used to have an old tape, that, like much of the tapes made back then, eventually were destroyed. But it was nice.

Of course, the entire house smelling of food and cigars wasn't always the best combination--sometimes Ronnie would buy cheap stuff because he was too lazy to go somewhere good and the smell was awful... It's funny though, I do kinda miss that smell of my Nanna's house. It's been awhile since I've been there.

Maybe one day I'll be able to go again.

You sentimental guy! Those were great times and yes, we took them seriously! Good foundations last a lifetime! Hope there's still some of that going on!

Love, Dad
